The theatre map in Cyprus will be enriched again this July with performances of ancient Greek drama, presented by theatre groups from Cyprus and abroad, in the context of the nineteenth organization of the “International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama”, which is organized by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute and the Cyprus Tourism Organization. The Festival that was honored just a few days ago with the EFFE Label 2015/2016 has been established as a distinct cultural institution with an international identity that is strengthening the position of Cyprus in the world cultural map.
A diverse programme has been developed by the organizers right in the middle of the difficult economical conditions, giving priority to quality rather than quantity.
From the 1st until the 30th of July, five theatre groups from Cyprus, Serbia, Spain and Israel will present ancient Greek drama performances at the Paphos Ancient Odeon, the Curium Ancient Theatre and this year at “Skali” Amphitheatre in Aglantzia.
All the performances of the “International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama” are included in the official program “European Capital of Culture – Pafos2017”, this year also.
Diachronic desire of the organizers is the widest possible attendance of the Cypriot audience as well as foreign visitors to the festival’s performances, since they offer the opportunity every year to theatre friends to enjoy spectacular productions from various countries of the world, in low performance ticket prices.
The “2015 International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama” is dedicated to the memory of the unforgettable Christakis Georgiou, a special man, writer and theatre critic, who served the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute since its foundation, as a founding member and as the President of the Board of Directors since 1983 until 2011. Christakis Georgiou was one of the pioneers of the “International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama”, which he zealously supported throughout the whole course of his presidency and he contributed to a great extend to its establishment and development. This dedication is a small tribute to his memory.
