The European Capital of Culture opens the gates of the renovated Markideio Theatre with a unique performance dedicated to Constantinos Cavafy and Marguerite Yourcenar. On Saturday, 18th of November 2017 at 20.30 p.m., we welcome the outstanding British actress Charlotte Rampling, on her first visit to Cyprus for the European Capital of Culture. Greek-French actor Polydoros Vogiatzis and guitarist Varvara Gyra will accompany her on stage to present, in a unique setting, the extremely interesting literary encounter between Constantinos Cavafy and Marguerite Yourcenar, edited by Jean-Claude Feugnet.
Cavafy’s poetry is renowned across the world. Its translation in several languages reflects the true power and significance of its worldwide acknowledgment. This very power is what makes him such a great poet, revealing the timelessness and universality of his poems. Cavafy has conveyed to us images and emotions that are still relevant to this day. Marguerite Yourcenar’s texts, imbued with her female genious and great sensitivity, highlight in a unique way both known and unknown aspects of Cavafy’s poetry, with an emphasis on love and death, solitude, the political dimension, existential and physical decline.
The idea of presenting the two creators in this performance, with a focus on Cavafy’s work, highlights his poetry’s power and meaning.
