The myth of Galatea has been pivotal to the development of Pafos’ identity and constitutes the central pattern for the Open Air Factory. According to the myth, Pygmalion fell deeply in love with his creation and beseeched Venus to breathe life into his sculpture, Galatea. Touched by his deep veneration, the goddess granted the sculptor his wish, allowing him to become one with Galatea, resulting in the birth of Pafos, the fruit of their love after which the city of Pafos was named. Dance Cyprus Company presents a neo-classical ballet inspired by this founding myth, choreographed by Davide Bombana. Music is by the award-winning Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.
The performance includes dancers from Cyprus and Italy: Vicky Kalla, Alexia Koutzis, Melani Lambrou, Anastasia Paschali, Fouli Stylianidou, Rania Charalambous, Joseph Caldo, Luca Cesa, Artan Dirmishi, Roberto Doveri, Francesco Moro, Nicola Simonetti and Dance Cyprus Juniors.
The Cyprus Chamber Orchestra and Philip Kohnke of the Hannover State Opera Symphony Orchestra will also be participating.
Music works by award-winning Estonian Composer Arvo Pärt: ‘Sindone’, ‘Sarah was 90 years old’, ‘Festina Lente’, ‘Lennart’, ‘Alina’, ‘Lamentate’, Summa’, ‘Fratres’ ‘Homage to Benjamin Britten’, ‘Mein Weg’.
