Inauguration of the first exhibition of Pafos2017
Just a few days before the official taking of the title of the European Capital of Culture, the Organisation Pafos2017 inaugurated, with great success, its first Exhibition entitled “Departing Mythologies”.
The Organisation European Capital of Culture – Pafos2017, actively honouring the great creators of the so-called Second Generation of Cyprus, inaugurated the exhibition “Departing Mythologies” on Wednesday 28th of December, at the “En Plo” gallery.
Through a selection of works by eight great artists of the so-called Second Generation of Cyprus, as well as the reshaping of the venue, the curator Dr. Hesperia Eliadou-Suppiej created, using the works of the participating artists, a second scenographic space, whose structure is inspired by the portico of the Temple of Aphrodite in Pafos, creating in this way an atmosphere of mystagogy amid light and darkness.
Artists Stass Paraskos, Costas Economou, Andreas Charalambides, George Kotsonis, Christos Christou and Christos Foukaras, have influenced and enriched not only the artistic scene of Cyprus but have also managed, through their long creative course, to assimilate elements of their country, as well as influences from the outside world, leaving behind them a strong legacy and heritage for the coming generations.
The eight large scale works of art were placed on big walls, surrounded by large mirrors. As characteristically mentioned by the curator of the exhibition, the works and mirrors have been placed in such a way as to create a meeting and conversation bridge between works and visitors, but also artists with the past, the present and the future. The aim of this, is the participation of each visitor in an experiential ritual of empirical quest and recognition of the wealth of artistic creation born by the Pafian land, through specially selected works of art by the curator.
The Chairman of the Organisation, Dr. Christos Patsalides, thanked the Artists that marked the History of Art of the island with their work and mentioned that, through their course, they constitute the pioneers in the sense of Cultural Production. Adding that, the choice of this exhibition was not at all a random one, since the exhibition is also the harbinger of the great celebration that will follow, as well as a bridge between the Cultural Production of these important artists with what the Organisation aims to adjust with the taking of the title of the institution, which places Pafos, and Cyprus at large, on the Cultural map of Europe.
“En Plo” gallery was also inaugurated on Wednesday evening, having been substantially restored and reinstated in the Cultural life of Pafos, as a space for the hosting of exhibitions and other events by the European Capital of Culture – Pafos2017.
The exhibition will be open until February 28th, 2017 (10:00-13:00 and 16:00-19:00).
