Have a look who is behind the grand production, Cassandre !

The renowned  cinema and theatre actress from France, Fanny Ardant, visits Cyprus for the first time to take part in the programme of the European Capital of Culture Pafos2017  starring the momentous role of Michael Jarrell’s Cassandre.

Cassandre is a monumental Comédie de Genève production inspired by Michael Jarrell and brought to life by a group of award-winning creators under the direction of Hervé Loichemol and the music of Michael Jarrell, based on the novel Cassandra by Christa Wolf. It is a monodrama for actress and orchestra, performed compellingly by Fanny Ardant under the music direction of Jean Deroyer with the participation of the Commandaria Orchestra.

Christa Wolf (1929-2011) is considered one of the great contemporary writers, as the numerous literary prizes awarded to her witness. She studied literature in Leipzig under the National Socialist regime and married Gerhard Wolf. She worked for the German Writers’ Union and published texts that remained close to the aesthetical canons of democratic socialism. After 1976 and the exclusion of several members of the Writer’s Union, despite her break with the authorities in her country, she chose not to leave the RDA and continued to write (Cassandre in 1983 and Incident in 1987, amongst others). When the events of the autumn of 1989 took place, Christa Wolf was one of the main voices of the democratic movement.

Born in Geneva in 1958, Michael Jarrell studied composition in the class of Éric Gaudibert at the Conservatoire de Genève where he was appointed professor of composition in 2004. Since 1982, his work has received numerous awards, while he was celebrated at the Musica Nova Helsinki festival which was dedicated to him. From October 1991 to June 1993, he was the resident composer for the Orchestre de Lyon and, in 1996, he was welcomed as “composer in residence” at the Festival de Lucerne. In 2010, he received the Music Award of the City of Vienna.

The French conductor Jean Deroyer was awarded his five first prizes at the age of fifteen. He was invited to conduct some of the greatest orchestras in Europe, such as the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Radio Symphonie Orchester Wien, the Symphonie Orchester, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and the Orchestre de Paris. Since 2008, Jean Deroyer has been music director of the Court-circuit ensemble, and, since 2014, he has been principal conductor of the Orchestre de Basse Normandie.

Hervé Loichemol studied drama at the École du Théâtre national de Strasbourg and has presented several plays in the Festival d’ Avignon. Since 2011, he has been director at the Comédie de Genève. He has taught at ESAD in Geneva, at the École du Théâtre National de Strasbourg, at the SPAD in Lausanne, where he was manager, and at the École de la Comédie de Saint-Étienne.

The Orchestre La Grande Commanderie de Chypre (Commandaria Orchestra) was established in 2009 by the Cyprus Wine Museum. The appellation of the Orchestra directly makes reference to the region where the Cyprus Wine Museum is based, the Great Commandery of Cyprus; a region where the Sovereign, Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem had their headquarters. Commandaria is also the appellation of the unique sweet wine of Cyprus.

The Commandaria Orchestra’s main mission is to spread the musical culture of Cyprus. Its rich repertoire includes pieces from the medieval times to date. The orchestra’s artistic director is the conductor Francis Guy.
