Open call for dancers for “Spatial Counterpoint”, A project by the European Capital of Culture - Pafos2017
Professional dancers and dance students are invited to register their interest for participating in “Spatial Counterpoint”, an interdisciplinary dance project by the European Capital of Culture – Pafos2017, which will take place on the 12th and 13th of July 2017, in different sites of Pafos’ city centre.
A different story is hidden in every space, house, square and street. In the spirit of the Open Air Factory, three contemporary dance performances will be held in outdoor, unusual and non-theatre spaces with internationally acclaimed choreographers and dancers from Cyprus, joining forces in a creative collaboration with architecture specialists. The outdoor spaces selected will provide the necessary inspiration for the choreographers who will design the performances working with other partners and volunteers. Two of the shows will deal with the revitalisation of the city centre through an architectural dance and the interaction between individuals and larger social groups.
Choreography and Architecture encounter one another creating a story, an unexpected event, a moving dance performance experience and an artistic intervention in the landscape of Paphos town. The city becomes a large outdoor stage that hosts works inspired from itself and welcomes its citizens-spectators, along with redefining the essence and the substance of various areas.
The lack of suitable spaces but at the same time the existence of raw materials at these sites, connects the project with the urban regeneration programme of the city that uses placemaking as a contemporary interference in public spaces. Its aim is to create the potential for interaction between the spectating citizens and their city.
The program is under the artistic direction of the choreographer Erica Charalambous (UK/CY), with Emilios Koutsoftides (UK/CY) as lead architect, working with choreographers Lili M. Rampre (SL/BE), Katja Mustonen (FIN/DE) and dance teaching artists Georgios Pillas (CY/USA), Ann-Sylvia Clarke (USA/NO). The project is organised in collaboration with MACoDE (Master of Contemporary Dance and Education) of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt and with the School of Architecture, Land and Environmental Sciences of the University of Neapolis in Paphos.
The auditions will take place on the 13th of April 2017, between 10:00 – 13:00, by the choreographers of the project Lili M. Rampre (Slovenia), Katja Mustonen (Finland) and Erica Charalambous (Cyprus) and the dancer and dance teacher Georgios Pillas (Cyprus/USA) at “Skevi Menelaou Dance School” in Pafos (22, Nikolaou Nikolaidi Avenue, 1st Floor).
